Renewing your passport book. *Que the dramatic music… dun, dun, dunnnnnnnnnnn*

It had came to that time, where my passport was set to expire and I had to do the whole renewal thing. This was my first time doing this. Boy, does 10 years go by FAST!!!!! Here are some easy steps to follow when it’s time to update your passport…

  1. Go to to get the passport renewal form (DS-82).

  2. Fill out the DS-82 form

  3. Go take a new photo at CVS or Walgreen’s it will run you about $10. You will need 2 pictures. One to staple to the DS-82 Form and one to Staple to your old passport. Also, make sure you look cute in your picture- you're going to have it for 10 years!

  4. Get a money order… you can get this at your bank, a check cashing place, or the post office. I got mine from the post office. They ended up being the cheapest, $5 I believe. You will need to get a money order for the EXACT amount for the renewal…which is, $110.00. The will not accept checks, credit cards or cash. It must be in money order format only.

  5. Bring your old passport booklet, DS-82 Form, new photos, money order, and a manila envelope to the post office. There you will send off your babies. crying face emoji.

  6. But - within 4-6 weeks, you’ll get back your new passport, and old passport in two separate mailings. Your old one will have two cutcut out circles in it, telling the airport that it cannot be used any longer. But you can keep it as memories of all of the stamps that you’ve collected within that 10 yr period. I appreciated this because I didn't lose my precious stamps!

This is a guideline for taking your passport photos:

  • Your head must face the camera directly with full face in view.

  • You must have a neutral facial expression or a natural smile, with both eyes open.

  • Taken in clothing normally worn on a daily basis

  • Taken in the last 6 months

  • Use a plain white or off-white background

  • Be sized correctly

  • 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm)

  • Head must be between 1 -1 3/8 inches (25 - 35 mm) from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head

  • Printed on matte or glossy photo quality paper

  • Printed in color

  • You cannot wear glasses.

  • If you cannot remove your glasses for medical reasons, please include a signed note from your doctor with application.

  • You cannot wear a hat or head covering.

  • If you wear a hat or head covering for religious purposes, submit a signed statement that verifies that the hat or head covering in your photo is part of recognized, traditional religious attire that is customarily or required to be worn continuously in public.

  • If you wear a hat or head covering for medical purposes, submit a signed doctor's statement verifying the hat or head covering in your photo is used daily for medical purposes.

  • Your full face must be visible and your hat or head covering cannot obscure your hairline or cast shadows on your face.

  • You cannot wear headphones or wireless hands-free devices.

Now you’re ready to travel again! Literally, I felt so empty without my passport. So, glad I can be on the go again for the next 10 years. Where will you go? My first trip with my renewed passport will be to go back to Dubai!

Please note the following:

*If you need expedited passports or passport cards, you’ll need to do a different procedure and the costs will be different as well.

*You can still use your previous passport, only if you have old visas in there that have not reached their expiration yet. For instance, my Brazil visa does not expire until 2026. So, I can continue to bring my old passport AND my new one on trips to Brazil until 2026.

*If you travel a lot, consider getting a 52 page book vs. a 30 page booklet. It is the same price anyway.
